s* NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION A"

WASHINGTON. D.C. 20665-0001

\*****/ liay 27,1997 The Honorable Thomas H. Allen United States House of Representatives Washington, D.C. 20515-1901

Dear Congressman Allen:

In response to your letter to Dennis K. Rathbun of May 7,1997, I am enclosing relevant documents that would normally be released to the public relating to the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Station for you to provide to your constituent, Carla Dickstein. These records were accumulated by the independent Safety Assessment Team (lSAT) and respond to her request for " individual reports, draft ISAT reports, dissenting opinions, meeting notes, communications between Chair Jackson and the ISAT, and other information in the NRC's possession." Please be advised that we have contacted all members of the Maine Yankee ISAT in an effort to provide applicable documents.

In accordance with your request, we are providing you with the following documents:  !

Appendix A is a list of all the documents we are enclosing in their entirety which will be ,

made publicly available or are already in the NRC Public Document Room. Appendix 8 is a I list of all the documents we are enclosing that have been partially redacted in accordance with Exemption 6 of the Freedom of information Act to delete information, the disclosure of which would constitute a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy (e.g., social I

security numbers). These documents will also be placed in the NRC Public Document Rcom. The staff believes that these records are a complete response to your request.

However, if additional records promulgated by the 1 SAT become available, we will forward them to you.

In addition, please note that the staff sent some documents to the licensee for a proprietary / confidential review pursuant to Exemption 4 of the Freede of Information Act.

Upon receipt of the licensee's response, we will forward to you the releasable portions of those documents, as well as place the documents in the Public Document Room.

I trust the above is responsive to the concerns of Ms. Dickstein.

1 Sincerely, s

L J seph Callan Ex cutive Director for Operations
