}ll:}lM))Y We discussed the corrosion effects on material in a salt miuc environment and SW1.idicated that tha environment g; cared to be EE84; ideal for wastn stonge. : Equipment which remained trom early

!.R mining days (carly 190)'s) showed little corrosion from the constant tenperature (20c) and relative humidity (50%) atmos-

The" depth of 'the present hine is 1000 ft. ' At this depth loadings 4,7,,;

byplasticmovement.(creep)ofthesalt.

The American Salt Company is currently miriing a site approximately.

N 1000 ft from a sectios of the Carey Mine.

In addition, several 5"

gas wells are active... an area adjacent to the site.

SW1 feels

'";gl.l that with appropriate controls these activities should not affect q;.p.4 waste operations.

[D y SMi indicated that they could dispose' of LLW at the same prices e

charged by iE.C0 and Chem-Muclear. They would be limited, however.

to small-packages.

The elevator capacity and shaft size would

' " ""]

.,,4.g;vc;.c; prevent large or heavy items from being transferred into the mine.

.;.;.l.

SYN indicated a concern for waste form characteristics. They said :

Yh a completely dry waste would he required and they might rot allow 1

Conslusions: In order to operate the mine, $WN needs to improve

me.

A great deal of work has been perforaeo'by ORNL and AER in the course Ern

.n of their work at Lyons. Therefore there is considerabic infor-mation on salt properties, geology,, hydrology, mine operations, and 4

site hazards. The use of the site for LLW disposal appears fess-ibic at this time. SWit, however, I feel, has greatly underestimated :.

the licensing effort required for a permit. They feel Kansas will "scd issue them a permit for pilot plant operation.with actuC tastes in..
