1.0 INTRODUCTION
In accordance with its agreement with the U.S.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Cleveland Electric Illuminating (CEI] continues to monitor the seismic activity in a restricted region of Northeastern Ohio, encompassing the site of the Perry Nuclear Power Plant, two deep injection wells operated by CAulIO, and the epicentral area of the January 31, 1986 earthquake.
This fif th Quarterly Report covers the period from October 16 to December 31, 1987.
An update of the injection data is also provided in Appendix A.
2.0 SEISMIC NETWORK During this period, the Automated Seismic Telemetering and Recording System [AUTOSTAR) has operated independently since the supporting MEQ-800 portable instruments have been removed.
The system, fully described in the third Quarterly Report, has performed in a very reliable manner.
Figure 1 shows the station locations around the area of interest.
3.0 OBSERVED SEISMICITY 3.1 Epicentral Area of January 31, 1986 There was no earthquake activity within the epicentral area during the present quarter. The last event occurred on February 12, 1987.
3.2 The Corridor Between the January 31, 1986 Epicenter and the Iniection Wells During the quarter, only one microearthquake was detected, on November l
22, 1987.
Its M magnitude was estimated to be -0.1 on the basis of l
a5 second average duration.
Figure 2 shows the 15 seismic signals l
recorded at AUTOSTAR's five stations and Figure 3 illustrates the l
epicentral location.
Figure 4
presents the updated seismicity observed since January 31, 1986 between longitudes 81.0 and 81.5W.

Table 1 presents an updated list of all events within or near the January 31, 1986 epicenter - Calhio wells corridor.
3.3 Other Events Recorded by AUTOSTAR During the period covered. AUTOSTAR triggered on several local and regional quarry blasts.
It also recorded three local microcarthquakes outside its aperture.
The events occurred on December 19, 1987, at 11:56 UT, December 25 at 08:28 UT, and on December 29, 1987 at 07:32 UT.
These events have M mag u s estimated at 2.0, 2.2, and 1.2 c
respectively.
The first two events are approximately located east of Ashtabula, in the area of the July 13, 1987 sequence. The third event is located in the area north of Painesville and east of Fairport Harbor; its location parameters are presented in Table 2.
4.0 DISCUSSION The November 22, 1987 microcarthquake is located closely to the August 15, 1987 epicenter, which also had a M
-0.1.
These two small
=
c events are at the southern limit of a linear pattern made by several microcarthquakes located since the monitoring began.
At this time, the significance of this epicentral distribution is not clear, particularly because most of these events are very small and the depth control variable, since the minimum distance to the closest station is of ten larger than the estimated depth.
There are many gas wells in the immediate vicinity of these microearthquakes [see Figure 1); a potential relationship between the gas wells and some microearthquakes is currently being examined.
The December 29 microearthquake was located by John Carroll University observatory, with the integration of CEI arrival times.
The larger JCU network aperture is more suitable to locate this event longitudinally than the CEI net, but it is complemented for latitude by the CEI net.
The hypocentral location of this microearthquake is 1766J
- 2*
Weston Geophysical
close to another deep injection well located in Painesville, but a positive causal correlation cannot be supported at this time.
The two microcarthquakes cast of Ashtabula are most likely aftershocks of the July 13, 1987 ovents.
Because both the CEI and JCU networks are located 35 to 70 km to the southwest of the epicenters, a Ir..ger location uncertainty exists.
A systematic bias caused by the inaccuracy of the postulated crustal model is also expected.
The micronet data were shared with the John Carroll Observatory for its study of regional events.
5.0 CONCLUSION
The seismic activity during this quarter was limited to one microearthquake in the corridor between the injection wells and the main shock of 1986.
The exact nature of the seismicity within the micronet aperture is still unknown and remains the object of CEI's investigations.
Three other small regional events occurred outside the network aperture.
