TASK UESCRIPTION FOR-LICENSING TCCHNICAL ASSISTANCE:

DURABILITY OF CONCRETE AT HIGH TEMPERATURES TASK 007, FIN 01064 1.0

Background:

Spent fuel from nuclear power reactors must be safely stored for several years until a high level waste repository is operational. One of the principal storage modes being considered during this interim period is reinforced concrete casks. Concrete may also be used for other storage methods. One of the engineering safety aspects of these modes of concern to the NRC is the long-tem behavior of concrete under elevated temperatures.

It is known that the composition of concrete, its method of manufacture, cad particularly, the amounts of free water and water of hydration can significantly affect the characteristics of concrete.

In this task the NRC plans to obtain the data base available to quantitatively predict the changes in important concrete charac.teristics as a function of time, temperature, and operating environment (e.g., climatic changes).

In addition, a plan will be developed to obtain the information necessary to eliminate any gaps in the data base such that there will be sufficient understanding of the durability of concrete over extended storage priods.

2.0 Work Required:

Subtask A - Develop Database The contrr.ctor will detemine general areas of manufacture in which concrete is Subject to elevated temperatures.

For each manufacturing i

area the contractor will develop the existing data be;e and determine the need for expansion of the data base. The contractor will visit locations at which experts can assist in an undusi.anding of the status of supporting data and the test or experimental methods which would be required to develop the additional information.

Subtask B - Plan For Additional Information Based on the existing infomation and site visits, the contractor will develop a plan for obtaining the necessary additional infomation, including

' cost and schedule' A recomendation will be made as to orgaafzations l

dich are qualified to obtain the infomation.

3.0 Repor' ting Requi'rements:

The contractor shall submit letter repcrts which summarize the results of l

each subtask.

9 4.0 Meetings and Travel:

Four meetings between the NRC and the contractor will be held at the NRC office in Silver Spring, Maryland. Meetings are expectedirt the beginning and completion of each subtask. Two trips to meet with concrete experts wili be required.

5.0 Per'iod of Performance:

The work described herein shall be completed by June 30, 1988.

6.0 Level of Effort:

The level of effort is estimated as follows:
