Mr. Ronald L. 'Ballard, Chief Environmental Projects Branch I Division of Site Safety and Environmental Analysis U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555
Dear Mr. Ballard:
On October 3, 1978, I received your letter (addressed to my predecessor Sanford Gaines) seeking any information regarding environmental impacts and acceptability of a nuclear power plant at eight alternative sites throughout New England.
I have surveyed all individuals.in this office who might be aware of such information and have searched our files; unfortunately, there is relatively little material available.
I enclose three documents relating to North Kingston, RI (Rome Point). However, these papers state conclusions about environmental acceptability rather than facts you might insert in the impact statement. A possible source of relevant information on Rome Point is Mr.. George Matthiessen, Marine Research, Inc., 141 Falmouth Heights Road, Falmouth, MA 02540; Mr. Matthiessen's firm conducted a series of environmental surveys on Rome' Point five or six years ago.
Our Environmental Impact Office suggests that you examine the March 1978 draft environmental impact statement and appendices prepared by the Department of Energy for proposed routes of the Dickey-Lincoln transmission lines. Appendix E, entitled
" Ecological Resources Impact Study," analyzes alternative sites at Errol and Littleton, NH.
If you have further questions on these sites, contact Elizabeth Higgins at (617) 223-0400.
Sincerely yo s, 4 M
