NRC !NSPECTION REPORT 50-298/97-04
Dear Mr. Horn:
An NRC inspection was conducted April 7-11,1997, at your Cooper Nuclear Station

reactor facility. The enclosed report presents the scope and results of that inspection.

This inspection consisted of observations of nondestructive examinations, documentation
reviews, and discussions with plant personnel associated with the inservice inspection and
'
erosion / corrosion monitoring programs. Subsequently, in-office inspection continued until
April 21,1997, because certain information requested during the onsite portion of the
'

inspection was not received until April 17,1997. Upon review of that information, we
determined that the subject issue (f ailure of service water piping to Diesel Generator 1)
I
was an unresolved item pending further NRC onsite review. This decision was provided by
telephone to Mr. Brad Houston, of your staff, on April 21,1997. The enclosed report

presents the scope and results of the inspection.

in accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter
and its enclosure will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).
