j SUBJECT: NRC !NSPECTION REPORT 50-298/97-04

Dear Mr. Horn:

An NRC inspection was conducted April 7-11,1997, at your Cooper Nuclear Station {

q. reactor facility. The enclosed report presents the scope and results of that inspection.  :

! This inspection consisted of observations of nondestructive examinations, documentation

reviews, and discussions with plant personnel associated with the inservice inspection and

'

erosion / corrosion monitoring programs. Subsequently, in-office inspection continued until  ;

April 21,1997, because certain information requested during the onsite portion of the '

l inspection was not received until April 17,1997. Upon review of that information, we

determined that the subject issue (f ailure of service water piping to Diesel Generator 1)

I was an unresolved item pending further NRC onsite review. This decision was provided by

-

telephone to Mr. Brad Houston, of your staff, on April 21,1997. The enclosed report

i presents the scope and results of the inspection.

j in accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter

and its enclosure will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).
