SUBJECT:
lilIRD QUARTERLY REPORT FROM ILLIN0IS Off TRNISPORTATION OF RADI0 ACTIVE MATERIAL I am enclosing for your infonaation a copy of the third quarterly report submitted by Illiriois in accordance with its contract with HRC and DOT for the surveillance of radioactive materials in transport within the State. The report covers the period, December,1977 through February, 1978.
Illinois' contractual program is different from that of the other States in that it monitors the transportation of radioactive materials Dv means of Government-supplied detection instrumentation installeit in ten State Police cruisers. As Dr. Peterson mentions in his letter-report, the instrumentation is so sensitive that it frequently picks up unusual i
background radiation readings; in fact, it has even registered the presence of radiation from passing cars where an occupant had recently taken radiopharmaceuticals for medical diagnostic purposes.
