JOINT NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION - NATIONAL MINING ASSOCIATION (NMA) URANIUM RECOVERY WORKSHOP. GROUND-WATER MINI-WORKSHOP.

JUNE 5, 1997

Dear Mr. Robertson:

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff is organizing a one-day workshop on ground-water compliance issues associated with the reclamation and operation of uranium recovery facilities, as a part of the joint NRC/NMA workshop to be held in Denver, Colorado on June 3. 4. and 5.

The goal of this mini-workshop is to promote open discussions and information exchanges between uranium industry representatives arid the regulatory community regarding current perspectives and experiences with ground-water programs at licensed facilities.

I wish to extend an invitation to Ms. Dorothy Stoffel of your staff to make a brief presentation at this mini-workshop on the afternoon of June 5,1997 on the State of Washington's perspective and experience with ground-water compliance programs at the licensed uranium mill tallings sites. Of particular interest is the State of Washington's ex]erience with implementing ground-water protection standards which satisfy bota NRC/ Agreement State requirements and EPA / Safe Drinking Water Act requirements.

Ms. Stoffel's training as a hydrogeologist and experiences within an NRC Agreement State program will greatly enhance the content of the mini-workshop.

Enclosed are copies of the registration form, which u)on completion should be returned to the address on the form.

In addition, a alock of rooms has been reserved at the Cherry Creek Inn, in Denver, which will be the site of the workshop. A draft agenda for the workshop is also enclosed.

If you have any questions, please contact the mini-workshop organizer. Mr. Michael Layton at (301) 415-6676.

Sincerely.

(Daniel M. Gillen for)
