Dear Sir:

Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 1 (TMI-1)

Operating License No. DPR-50 Docket No. 50-289 Fire Protection Program In the response to Question 6 in our letter of July 20, 1978 (GQL 1250), a commitment was made to review the Auxiliary Building Fire System to determine any modifications necessary to provide a backup water system to areas where both the fixed water system and the backup manual hose station could be dis-abled in the event of a failure.

The enclosed drawing (C-302-231) shows the fire service water piping for TMI-1.

A valve vill be installed on the 12" main as shown (coordinate E-3, marked "AB")

to separate the automatic fire suppression systems in the Auxiliary Building from the installed manual hose reels. The drawing also shows the proposed loca-tion of the standpipe (coordinate C-3, marked'UBSP") that vill serve the hose reels that vill be installed in the Control Building per the commitment in our June 12, 1978 letter (GQL 1068).

Installing the valve and standpipe as shown vill ensure that one water suppression system (fixed or hose) is available to the Auxiliary Building and the Control Building in event of a fire service water piping failure.

Contingent upon NRC review, implementation of these modifications will be accomplished by the end of the 1980 refueling outage (Fire Protection Safety Evaluation Report Items 3.1.2 and 3.1.20).

S cerely,

/
