Plutonium Pacemakers, Renewal of License #SNM-1735 1.
The Veterans Administration Medical Center of Cincinnati, Ohio, holds license #SNM-1735 for plutonium pacemakers.
By this letter, the Radiation Safety Committee is indicating that the two patients currently wearing plutonium-238 pacemakers will be followed in the Cardiology Clinic of the Veterans Administration Medical Center, 3200 Vine Street, Cincinnati, Ohio. We plan to implant no further pacemakers.
If either of these paticr.ts should die, the pacemaker will be removed from the patient and retur ned to the manufacturer in a special container provided to us by the manufacturer.

The Cardiology Clinic is directed by Michael Pine, M.D., Cardiology Section, VA Medical Center, 3200 Vine Street, Cincinnati, Ohio 45220, 513/861-3100. Dr. Pine is licensed to practice medicine in the State of Ohio and is certified by the Specialty Boards of Internal Medicine and Cardiology. He is Chief of the Cardiology Section at the VAMC and has extensive previous experience with pacemakers.
Enclosed is a statement signed by Dr. Pine certifying that he is familiar with the manufacturer's NRC protocol and that he agrees to follow this protocol.
