Dear Sirs:
Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 2 (TMI-2)
Operating License No. DPR-73 Docket No. 50-320 Auxiliary and Fuel Handling Buildings Quarterly Decontamination Schedule In response to the NRC letter dated March 7, 1984, the following is the status of Auxiliary and Fuel Handling Building Decontamination for the Fourth Quarter 1987. This update addresses only those areas where Technical Specification surveillances were not being performed due to ALARA considerations.
Make-up Filter Cubicle (AX117)
ALARA exemption has been taken for Technical Specification Surveillance 4210-SUR-3775.01 (4331-R3), "Fire Barrier Penetration Fire Seal Inspection."
Recent radiological surveys show general area dose rates of 600 to 3C00 mrem /hr, with contact readings as high as 5.5 rem /hr.
Make-up and Purification System (MU&P) resin removal is scheduled during the First Quarter 1988. Radiological conditions can be expected to remain variable until resin removal is completed.
Systems and surface decontamination will commence following resin removal.
Seal Injection Cubicle (AXOO4)
ALARA exemption is currently being taken for Technical Specification Surveillance 4210-SUR-3244.01 (4301-M8), "Containment Integrity Verification." General area dose rates in the cubicle proper range from 1 R/hr - 56 R/hr with contact readings as high as 140 R/hr.

-The heavily encrusted floor area has been scabbled. Scaffolding and debris removal are completed and follow-up scabbling is in progress and will continue in the First Quarter 1988.
Make-up Pump Suction (FH001) and Discharge Valve Alley (FH003 a & b)
The Make-up Pump Suction (FH001) and Discharge Valve Alley (FH003a & FH003b) have been released from radiological exemption status. General area dose rates for the Discharge Valve Alley (FH003b) range from 30 to 500 mrem /hr with hot spots of up to 6 R/hr. Technical Specification Surveillance 4210-SUR-3775.02, "Fire Barrier Penetration Fire Seal Inspection," was completed after this area was released.
Revision 2 of the TMI-2 Fire Protection Program Evaluation (FPPE), submitted November 17, 1987, deletes all fire areas except the Reactor Building. Based en this revision, the requirement for the inspection of fire penetration barriers and the requirement to perform an hourly firewatch when the barriers are non-functional also were deleted. Due to these changes in the FPPE, it is no longer necessary to have an ALARA exemption for the performance of fire barrier penetration fire seal inspections. Thus, this report no longer will address the status of cubicles which had required an ALARA exemption solely for the performance of fire barrier penetration fire seal inspections.
Future reports will be limited to a discussion of the status of the Seal Injection Cubicle (AX004).
Sincerely,
/
