Dear lir. Standerfer:

Subject:

Handling of Core Boro Equipment Above the Defueling Work Platfom j.,;.

(H66692)

Reference:

Letter dated December 31, 1987 fras F. R. Standerfer to Nuciccar Regulatory Cornission "Handling of Core Bore Equipment Above the Defueling Work Platfom" By letter dated December 31,1987 (referenced above) General Public Utilities Nuclear Corporation (GPUNC) requested HRC approval of a change in load height r

limit for the Core Bore Equipment above the Defueling Work Platfom. The change in load height would allow the incorporation of a spacer platfum and an underwater tool chcnger to aid in defueling the lower corresupport

asserbly, f

a Based on our review we conclude that the propostd addition of a spacer i

platfom and nodification of the load height linit is acceptable. The impact energy of a postulated load drop over the rotating work platfom is not i

j changed and the impact energy of a postulated load dro) over the stationary portion of the platfom remains within the linits of t1e previous analysis.

We have concluded that this activity can be acccolfshed without significant risk to the health and safety of the public and t1at this activity falls r

within the scope of activitics provicusly considered in the Progratmatic l

Environmntal Impact Staterant. We therefore approve the revised handling of core bore equipxnt as described in your December 31, 1987 letter (referenced j

a bove),,
