Section Vallecitos Nuclear Center Post Office Box 460 Pleasanton, California 94566-Gentlemen:

At our meeting.with you ot December 2,1977, at summary of which is enclosed, we indicated to you that, at present, we.do'not have sufficient. data to conclude that the postulated Verona. fault does not exist. We also stated that the U.S. Geological Survey, which is already ' informally involved, would be formally requested to advise us on the potential for surface faulting within the inmediate vicinity of the GETR. A copy of our December 9,1977 request to the U.S.G.S. on the matter is enclosed for your. information.

At our December 2,1977 meeting with you, we pointed out that an alternate approach to proving the lack of a potential for surface faulting would be to provide an analysis that would support a conclusion th.at the GETR can with appropriate modification. be operated safely assuming' a surface faulting condition.

I It is our understanding.tha't all infonnation related to the potential for surface faulting, at the GETR site that is now available to GE will be fontially documented with appropriate evaluative text and submitted to us before the.end of the year.

Further, it is our understanding that you are now considering whether to continue to bolster your case for no surface faulting or to follow the alternate' acceptable approach discussed above. Please let us-know what course of action you elect to follow in resolving the surface faultina issue.
