Docket No. 70-2623

Dear Shelly:

This is to confirm our telephone conversation of this date wherein the Staff requested and you agreed to an extension of the time within which the Staff may respond to both the interrogatories propounded by the Carolina Environmental Study Group on November 15, 1978, and the Request to Produce served by CESG on November 16, 1978. As I explained to you, the Staff's res'ources are presently committed to issuing the documents comprising the Staff's review of the safety and environmental considerations of the proposed license amendment. Once these documents issue, the Staff will be in a position to respond to your discovery requests. The Staff will provide its responses to Dr. Riley by December 29, 1978.

You expressed concern in our telephone conversation that a delay in receiving the Staff's responses could impact on further discovery contemplated by CESG. The Staff recognizes that additional discovery by CESG based upon the Staff responses may be appropriate, depending upon CESG's perception of the adequacy of the responses. Thank you for your considerations.

Sin ely,
