Dear Mr. Vercasio:

q On November 19,1996, Steve Shaffer of this office assisted in the survey performed by your office of the public area adjacent to the former Sylvania Electric Products, Inc.

facility Hicksville, New York. The results of Region I laboratory analysis of the four soil samples collected are provided below. Analysis was performed via gamma l spectroscopy. The uranium-238 activity is inferred from its daughter '

protactinium-234m.

SAMPLE A I Sample A was collected approximately one foot from the east side of the fence l separating the golf driving range from the properties on Cantiague Rock Road and 15 feet south of the property boundary between Magazine Distributors and Gilbert Displays.

Uranium-238 6.8 0.6 picocuries per gram (pCi/g) l Radium-226 1.6 0.5 pCi/g

. Uranium-235 0.42 0.03 pCi/g
