C. 20555 PLANT HATCH - UNITS 1, 2 NRC DOCKETS 50-321, 50-366 OPERATING LICENSES DPR-57, NPF-5 MODIFICATION OF RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER 82-33 Gentlemen:

Georgia Power Company (GPC), by letter dated April 15, 1983, provided a status report and completion schedule for meeting the requirements of NUREG-0737, Supplement 1. In Section 1 of the enclosure to that letter, GPC stated that the Safety Parameter Design System (SPDS) color monitors would be seismically qualified in accordance with IEEE 323-1974, even though NUREG 0737, Supplement i Section 4.1.c stated that seismic qualification of the SPDS is not required.

In keeping with the comitment, the SPDS color monitors inst:11ed in the Plant Hatch Control Room are seismically qualified. These e.itors have proven to be difficult to maintain, have inferior resolution compared to comercial grade components, and have a high failure rate.

To increase the reliability and effectiveness of the SPDS, the color.

monitors are being replaced with comercial grade monitors. GPC has written Design Change Requests to. replace the monitors and will complete the changeout in the near future.

If you have any questions in this regard, please contact this office at any time.

Sincerely, df%
