20555 Perry Nuclear Power Plant Docket Nos. 50-440; 50-441 Bedrock Deformation in the Perry Discharge Tunnel

Dear Mr. Varga:

On September 7, 1978, the excavation in the Ferry Discharge Tunnel exposed a bedrock fault at a location about 1350 feet from the Discharge Tunnel Entrance Structure (refer to Figure 1 on Page 5 of our June 7, 1978 report on the Intake Tunnel bedrock deformation). Your staff was notified by tele-phone of the fault's discovery on September 8, 1978 following verification of the fault by our Resident Geologist.

'Ihe Discharge Tunnel fault's geometry is similar to that observed for the fault discovered in the Perry Intake Tunnel and it is possible that this fault is the extension of the Intake Tunnel fault. Since we are currently conducting extensive geological investigations in the area to respond to your August 24, 1978 request for additional information on the Intake Tunnel fault, our plans are to provide a detailed report on the Discharge Tunnel fault in our response to these questions. Until our final report on the matter is available, we will continue to keep your staff informed of impor-tant developments in our investigations.

Very truly yoursj A.
