MAR 121986 Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing License No. 22-00057-01 Company ATTN: Mr. R. G. Wissink 3M Center St. Paul, MN 55101 Gentlemen:
Enclosed please find the results of the uranium isotopic re-analysis alluded to in our January 31, 1986 inspection report. The S54AU1 monitoring well sample
- obtained in September 1985 at the Twin Cities Army Amunition Plant revealed gross alpha concentrations in excess of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggested limits for uranium in drinking water. The isotopic analysis was perfomed to determine if the alpha contamination was due to depleted uranium from Honeywell waste streams or from naturally occurring isotopes.
The analysis, performed by the Department of Energy's Idaho Operations Office, indicated that the relative abundance of various uranium isotopes.were characteristic of natural and not depleted uranium. Accordingly, the NRC concludes that the elevated alpha concentrations found in well S54AU1 were of natural origin and were not related to NRC licensed activities. Concentrations of all uranium isotopes were found to be below EPA suggested limits.
Lynch at (312)y questions regarding this matter, please contact Mr. J. L.
If you have an 790-5500.
Sincerely, W. L.
