y ENCLOSURE REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORHATION UNIVERSITY OF ILLIN0IS ADVANCED TRIGA REACTOR DOCKET NO. 50-151

1. Your application refers to the verification and validation (V&V) process used by General Atomics (GA) to develop the software used in your proposed instrumentation and control (I&C) system. You state that you believe that the V&V process used by GA and reviewed by the NRC staff is transferable to the University of Illinois (U1) Advanced TRIGA I&C system. We agree with this assessment that the V&V is transferable.

However, there have been changes to the software since NRC reviewed the V&V plan. Please provide a description of the changes to the software that has occurred since our review of the V&V program and the V&V performed on these changes. Also please provide a description of the configuration management control used to control the various changes and distributions.

2. The I&C systems installed as replacements for existing systems have operated in parallel with the old systems that they were to replace.

This confirmed that the new system was operating satisfactorily prior to operation with the new system alone. Please confirm that you will operate the new I&C system in parallel with the existing to confirm proper operation and to gain experience with the new system. If you do not plan to operate the new I&C system in parallel, provide your detailed startup procedure for the new system. The procedure should include the methods that will validate the new system without parallel information from the old system.
