SUBJECT: NRC INSPECTION REPORT 50-445/97-01; 50-446/97-01

Dear Mr. Terry:

An NRC inspection was conducted January 27-31, and April 28 through May 2,1997, at

your Comancho Peak Steam Electric Station, Units 1 and 2, reactor facilities. This

inspection evaluated your self-assessment of engineering activities, which your staff

performed as an alternative to a planned NRC team inspection. Tlie enclosed report

presents the scopo end results of that inspection. The overall results of this inspection

were discussed with Mr. Don Woodlan of your staff on May 21,1997.

Our inspection found that your self-assessment of engineering was a thorough and l

comprehensive alteinative to the planned NRC team inspection in this area. Your self-  !

assessment concluded that your engineering activities met your program requirements.

Our independent inspection confirmed this conclusion. Therefore, in accordance with NRC i

,

inspectir>n Procedure 40501, " Licensee Self Assessments Related to Team Inspections,"

! the NRC plans no further inspection effort daring the current performance assessment

cycle at the Comanche Peak Steam Electric Station for NRC Inspection Procedure 37550,

" Engineering. j

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter j

and its encbsure will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).
