REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR TOPICAL REPORT EPRI TR-105697, "BWR VESSEL AND INTERNALS PROJECT, BWR REACTOR PRESSURE VESSEL SHELL WELD INSPECTION RECOMMENDATIONS (BWRVIP-05)"
Dear Mr. Terry:
By letter dated September 28, 1995, as supplemented by letter dated June 24, 1996, the Boiling Water Reactor Vessel and Internals Project (BWRVIP) submitted Topical Report EPRI TR-105697, "BWR Vessel and Internals Project, BWR Reactor Pressure Vessel Shell Weld Inspection Recommendations (BWRVIP-05)," for NRC review.
The report was intended to derr.onstrate the adequacy of alternative inspection requirements which would significantly reduce the extent of volumetric inservice inspections currer,tly required on BWR reactor pressure vessel shell welds. The NRC staff transmitted, by letters dated April 2 and May 20, 1996, two Requests for Additional Information (RAls).
In addition, several meetings were held between the BWRVIP and the NRC staff to discuss this issue, including a meeting with the NRC Commission on May 12, 1997.
During that meeting, the NRC staff committed to issuing a final safety evaluation of the BWRVIP-05 report within 6 weeks.
In order for the NRC staff to complete the assessment of this report, we request that the BWRVIP provide to the NRC staff an update providing the most current information in Appendix A of the BWRVIP-05 report.
We request that this update include:
(a) the information in the table for all reactor pressure vessel beltline shell weld inspections performed on U.S. BWRs (b) the location of the shell welds (e.g., beltline or other location)
(c) the year (s) the inspection (s) were performed (d) the types of inspections performed (e.g., UT, visual or enhanced visual, PT, RT), including the results of the inspections (e) the qualification standards used to perform the inspection (s)
