The seal was identified in Seabrook Station's Circulating Water System on June 17,1997 and recovered the same day. North Atlantic notified the National Marine Fisheries Service of this entrapment incident by telephone'. The New England Aquarium was also notified of this seal entrapment in order to schedule a necropsy in the near future. l 3

2 1995, recommending that North Atlantic report seal entrapment incidents. The attached seal entrapment incident report is enclosed as requested.

3 On Friday, June 13, 1997, North Atlantic submitted a Small Take Exemption Pennit for the

incidental taking of seals pursuant to Section 101(a)(5)(A) of the Marine Mammal Protection Act and in accordance with 50 CFR 216.104. The application requests a permit for the incidental taking of a small number of seals as a result of plant operations. l

Date ofIdentification and Recovery: June 17,1997 Species Identification: Believed to be a harbor seal Description / Condition of Seals: Seal appears to be ajuvenile weighing about 50 pounds.

The seal was intact, however, it was partially decayed at the time of recovery.

Reporter: Ronald A. Sher, Senior Scientist Recent Seal Observations: One intact seal was recovered on December 31,1996. l An incident repon was submitted to the NMFS 4.

Necropsy results by the New England Aquarium showed  ;

that this seal was a 150 pound adult male harbor seal in '

good health.

Recent Fish Entrapment: Limited numbers of fish were impinged at the approximate time of this seal entrapment incident.

Cooling Water Intake Temperature at Time of Entrapments: 48 F Plant Power Level at Time of Entrapment: Seabrook Station was in a refueling outage and not in l

operation. One of three circulating water pumps was operating.
