STAF REQUIREMENTS - BRIEFING ON STATUS OF LICENSE RENEWAL (SECY-97-118), 1:30 P.M.,
THURSDAY, JUNE 12, 1997, COMMISSIONERS' CONFERENCE ROOM, ONE WHITE FLINT NORTH, ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND (OPEN TO PUBLIC ATTENDANCE) l The Commission was briefed by the NRC staff on the status of the license renewal-related activities for nuclear power plants.
-Within the context of its license renewal efforts, the Commission indicated that the staff should complete expeditiously its analysis of the environmental data provided by the Department of Energy (DOE) related to the generic and cumulative environmental impacts-of transportation of high level waste around a high-level waste repository.
The staff should provide the Commission with options for addressing these environmental impacts within the framework of a license renewal application, including options for (1) rulemaking, and (2) specific exemptions for individual applicants..
The staff should forward to the Commission a schedule for completing the analysis of the DOE environmental data and for providing options to the Commission.
