During the Spring 1997 refueling outage on Farley Unit 1, three tubes were pulled from the steam generators in order to gather additional infonnation on steam generator degradation.

During earlier discussions with the NRC Staff, a request was made that " blind" degradation analyses for the steam generator tubes be docketed prior to the destructive examination of the steam generator tubes.

In accordance with the Staff s request, the requested " blind" analyses are attached.

" Blind' NDE Analyses for Farley-1 '97 Pulled Tubes

Three tubes were pulled from Farley-1 SGs in May,1997 at the EOC 14 outage. The tubes j

pulled and the type of degradation are identified in Table 1. Table 1 also summarizes the j

in situ test results for these indications.

This note summarizes the NDE analyses performed for each tube prior to the destructive examination. Consequently, these analyses j

can be considered to be " blind" NDE analyses. The NDE analyses are summarized in Table

{

2 for ODSCC at the TSP intersections and Table 3 for free span ODSCC. Attached figures j

for each indicatior. include RPC C scans, plots of depth profiles and UT crack maps. Depth profiling for the indications was performed in some cases two NDE analysts including a very 4

experienced senior analyst with significant experience in depth profiling and a field Level III analyst with limited training and experience in depth profiling. When only one average j

depth obtained from depth profiling is given in the tables, the values are from the senior i

analyst.

NDE Annivaan for Indiantinne at TSP In*_,Minne Tube R2C85 with a 13.7 volt indication at TSP 1 was pulled to provide data for support of l

tube integrity analyses and the ARC for ODSCC at TSP intersections. Depth profiling for this indication indicates a probable throughwall crack with an average depth of about 72%.

).

The length of the indication is about 0.7". The + Point analysis without any adjustment for l

coillead in or lead-out effects indicates a longer flaw but the best estimate is a flaw nearly j'

the support plate thickness. The + Point response shows a dip in the vertical amplitude just j

below the center of the TSP which could be associated with a ligament that could not be 3

resolved by depth profiling.

No bobbin indication at R29C47,1H was reported in the field bobbin analysis and this

]

intersection was not inspected in the field by + Point. Laboratory reanalysis of the field

~

bobbin data indicates a very distorted signal for which the voltage cannot be reliably defined i

but would be expected to exceed about 0.25 volts. The attached two bobbin analyses

)

estimate the > 0.25 volt as a sum of 0.18 and 0.07 contributions but the resulting voltage i

estimate would not be reliable for inclusion of this indication in the ARC database. The l

laboratory post pull + Point analysis indicates multiple indications typical of that found for cellular corrosion partially opened by the tube pulling operations.

No bobbin indication was reported for R6C28-1H although a + Point indication of about 0.22

)

volts was identified in the field inspection. Laboratory review of the field data would j

indicate about a 0.4 volt bobbin indication and a 0.25 volt + Point indication. As shown in j

the attached bobbin analysis, the flaw does not show a sharp break in the lissajous response j

and would be difficult to callin a field inspection.

1 NDE Analyses for Free Soan Indications on R29C47 and R6C28 1

Tube R29C47, deplugged during the inspection, was pulled for the large 17.5 volt bobbin i

indication and > 10 volt + Point indication. This indication represents a very large sludge i

pile indication and was pulled to further assess tube integrity for a large indication in order to assist future tube integrity assessments for sludge pile indications. The + Point analyses indicate a flaw of about 1.4" length that is throughwall with an average depth in the 63%

to 79% range. This indication began leaking at the SLB pressure differential which is indicative of throughwall penetration.

Tube R16C28 was pulled to assess free span indication, particularly above the sludge pile, and includes indications detected by bobbin and + Point as well as indications detected only by + Point. As many as 13 to 15 + Point indications are reported for this tube and the indications above the top of the tubesheet have very small bobbin and + Point voltages. The maximum bobbin voltage is about 0.27 volt and the maximum + Point voltage for the ODSCC indications is about 0.29 volt. A PWSCC indication about 0.15" long is reported just below the top of the tubesheet. Depth profiles were estimated for 13 indications but these estimates are not considered reliable due to the low voltage response of the indications. The overall results imply extensive shallow to modest depth indications extending over most of the length of this pulled tube section.

Establish crack morphology, NDE accuracy and support for evaluating large sludge pile indications. Assess for possible influence of plugged tube condition.

In situ leak test resulted in leak rate of 0.103 gpm at SLB conditions but did not leak at lower pressure differentials. Not pressure tested.

Tube cut just below 2nd TSP.

SG C: R2C85 - TSP indication with large volts. Exam to provide data to support tube integrity assessment and ARC leak rate and burst correlations. Delays need for another ARC tube pull for one cycle.

In situ leak test performed on this tube only at normal operating conditions and no leakage was found.

Tube cut just below 2nd TSP.

SG B: R16C28 - Free span ODSCC indications including indications found by bobbin and

+ Point and some indications reported only by + Point. Pulled to provide more detailed information on free span indications and to assess NDE detection and sizing.

Indication did not leak or burst during in situ pressure test at 10.6" elevation including overpressure test to 5910 psi.

Tube cut just below 2nd TSP.
