SUBJECT:

CHANGES TO THE AP600 STANDARD SAFELY ANALYSIS REPORT (SSAR) IN REVISION 13

Dear Mr. Liparulo:

On May 13, 1997, the staff received Revision 13 of the AP600 SSAR. Westing-house uses the sidebars to denote where changes have been made to the SSAR.

These sidebars are used by the staff to review the modifications made by Westinghouse. The staff also uses the revision number provided on each page to identify the pages needing particular attention due to changes in the docu-ment.

In Revision 13, the applicant provided pages to the SSAR in which no discern-able text or graphics changes were made, or where no repagination appears to have occurred, and yet, marked the pages Revision 13.

Examples of this are Pages IA-19, IA-21 through 1A-24, and 3-17 through 3-20.

Also, Page 18.4-1 (last change was Revision 9) and the opposite side of the page sheet, Page 18.4-2 (last change was Revision 11) were marked as Revision 13 although no apparent change was made to either side of the sheet. These are a few examples and are not meant to be a complete list. Although reprinting existing pages occurs for several reasons (to ease replacing pages in the SSAR or because changes occur on the opposite side of the sheet), the staff finds the recent practice of printing a new revision number on an unmodified page to be confusing. Therefore, we request that, when it is necessary to reprint an unmodified page, the page be printed unchanged with the appropriate revision number and the last changes noted in the sidebar. We further request that the applicant reprint the SSAR pages provided in Revision 13, that were not modified, with the appropriate revision number and sidebars associated with that revision. This will help facilitate the staff's review of your applica-tion.

If you have any comments regarding this matter, please contact Diane Jackson at (301) 415-8548.
