SUBJECT:

INVENTORY OF FEDERAL HAZARDOUS WASTE FACILITIES The attached letter from James Edward, Acting Associate Director of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Federal Facilities Enforcement Office requests that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission provide EPA with information about hazardous waste that is, or has been, stored, treated, or disposed of at NRC owned or operated facilities. The letter includes two questionnaires requesting specific information that EPA will use to complete j

its survey of Federal agency hazardous waste facilities. The Division of Waste Management (DWM) has been assigned lead responsibility for collecting this information from NRC offices and transmitting a completed questionnaire to EPA.

We are asking for your assistance in completing the inventory for NRC facilities by requesting that you first determine if your office, or any facility owned or operated by your office, has stored, treated, or disposed of any hazardous waste since 1996, if your office, of any facility owned or operated by your office, has stored, treated, or disposed of any hazardous waste since 1996, please complete the attached survey questionnaire. If your office, or any facility owned or operated by your office, has not stored, treated, or disposed of any hazardous waste since 1996, also please state this to DWM.

Mr. Edward's letter indicates that this survey is part of an ongoing effort, and that, in the past, EPA has requested this information concerning hazardous waste management activities at Federal facilities on a biennial schedule. EPA staff has indicated to NRC staff that EPA does not have (or cannot locate) completed questionnaires from NRC for previous surveys, or letters indicating that NRC owned or operated f acilities do not, or have not,

%,h stored, treated, or disposed of hazardous waste. Therefore, the references in Mr.

Edward's letter regarding previous survey information are not relevant to NRC facilities.

Also, please note that the survey only applies to NRC owned and operated facilities and does not apply to facilities // censed by NRC. In addition, DWM will ensure that the surveys are forwarded to the appropriate State regulatory authorities, per the survey instructions.

In order to provide EPA with the information by the date in its request, we are requesting

)

that you complete and return the questionnaires, or state that the survey is not applicable to your office to DWM by July 9,1997. Any questions concerning the survey should be gtg directed to Nick Orlando of my staff, at (301) 415-6749.
