! MEMORANDUM FOR: Raymond F. Fraley, Executive Director, Advisory Committee on l

Reactor Safeguards FROM
Eric S. Beckjord, Director, Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research

SUBJECT:

ACRS REVIEW OF THE NRC SAFETY RESEARCH PROGRAM Your memorandum of September 5, 19g1, suggested that the cognizant Committee staff engineer attend relevant RES staff meetings dealing with the review of ongoing research programs / projects. Your memorandum also requested timely notification of all such meetings in order to permit attendance by interested ACRS members and/or the cognizant staff engineers.

Staff members from the Office of Research are in daily contact with their i contractors for the purposes of contract monitoring, exchange of information, i and providing direction for ongoing projects. These contacts include telephone conversations, letters, and meetings most of which I do not i consider'as the relevant meetings noted in your memorandum. However, there are instances when RES staff meets with contractors for program review purposes, and it has been the staff practice to notify appropriate staff in the program offices of the meetings as a means of assuring staff coordination of research objectives and results. In the future, I will see to it that the ACRS or ACNW as appropriate is placed on the distribution for such notifications and ACRS and ACNW members or staff engineers are welcome to participate in these meetings.

I believe that the use of the existing meeting notification system used by RES  !

with other staff offices will provide you with the information necessary to assure that the ACRS remains informed regarding the NRC Safety Research i Program.
