NRC INSPECTION REPORT 70-734/97-02

Dear Mr. Edwards:

~ On May 13-15,1997, the NRC conducted an inspection at General Atomics' facility. The enclosed report presents the scope and results of that inspection. The findings of the inspection were discussed with members of your staff on May 15,1997.

Areas examined during this inspection included portions of your site decommissioning activities as identified in this report. Inspection activities consisted of selective examinations of procedures and representative records, interviews with personnel, confirmatory radiological surveys, and observation of activities in progress. required.

The inspection determined that activities conducted at the Torrey Pines Mesa and Sorrenco Valley facilities were generally characterized by implementation of effective programs in the areas of technician training, radiological characterizations, radiological instrument calibration, quality assurance reviews, quality control attributes, and the conduct of fine.1 radiological surveys. No violations were identified; therefore, no response to this letter is

required, in accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter and its enclosures will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).
