SUBJECT:

TELECON WITH MORRISON-KNUDSEN REGARDING BOD 0 CANYON PRELIMINARY DESIGN By letter dated March 4, 1986, Morrison-Knudsen Co. (M-K) requested my comments on a conceptual, preliminary design for the Bodo Canyon (Durango) remedial action plan. M-K submitted several preliminary drawings for review, prior to finalizing the design later this month.

In accordance with the request, I called Fred Feliz on March 19, 1986 to discuss my preliminary comments on the design concept. During our conversation, I made the following points:

1.

I indicated that it was doubtful that the propnsed apron (with a D 50 rock size of only 6") was adequate to handle the combined flows from off the pile and from the diversion ditches.

2.

I indicated that the erosion protection (D of only l'_2') for the 50 channel to the north of the site was probably not adequate, due to the existing steep channel slopes. WM Record file WM Project N DocketNo.

I indicated that the ditch or apron termination point should have rock which should.be placed at least to the deoth.of the existing gully.

I also indicated that the. ditch could probably be shortened somewhat, if this was done.

4.

I indicated that I was concerned about the berms and the fill that will be placed in the existing gullies and arroyos.

I suggested that this fill showed be protected by a rock layer to prevent future gully formation.

M-K indicated that these suggestions were much appreciated and would be taken under advisement during the development of the final plan. M-X indicated that they expected to make further revisions to this plan, based on the results of a meeting that was held in San Francisco on March 17, with the TAC.
