PA.19101 i (21518414000 January 7, 1985 b i Mr. Richard Hinkle ~ Chief, Facilities Section Department of Environmental Resources .i 1875 New Hope Street } Norristown, PA 19401 RE: Limerick Generating Station NPDES Permit PA0051926 q

Dear Mr. Hinkle:

his is to request a minor change to the subject permit and provide our notice of intent to use three chemical products in the Limerick Unit #1 cooling water system. .i he minor. change concerns tenperature nonitoring of the Perkiomen Creek . n as specified in "Other Requirements" A and N of the subject permit. As ~ discussed with you and Mr. J. P. Ridolfi of your staff previously, cn j Novenber 2,1984, water from the Perkicnen Creek will be used as a secondary source of water for the Limerick cooling towers. W e Perkiomen Creek is approximately six (6) miles from the surge tank and the curge tank is about a half mile from the cooling towers. Due to this long punping distance, tenperature monitoring would have no meaning or relation to the tenperature of the cooling tower blowdown discharged to the Schtrylkill River. Berefore, Perkicmen Creek tenperature monitoring should be deleted from the permit in "Other Requirements" A and N.

l In accordance with Section 92.7 " Reporting of DN or Increased j

Discharges," of the Departments' Rules and Regulations, we hereby submit notice of our intent to use three chemical products for cooling water treatnent at Limerick Generating Station, discharge point 001 (conbined discharges). % e three chemical products are: NAICO 1336 ('1blyltriazole corrosion inhibitor for copper), NAIOD 1370 (polyacrylate scale inhibitor) l and NAIID 1339 (zinc based corrosicn inhibitor for steel). Wese NALCO j products will be evaluated during a testing program as a means to control q. scale and corrosion in the Unit il cooling water system. i a 8501110045 G50107 g p' PDRADOCK05000g g 1 I \\ 1 ..m.m.

) ' 2850500590 The NAIID 1336 (TTL) will be used and tested as a means to control ocpper corrosion in the condenser cooling water system. We interd to use 20 ppm active TIL in the condenser cooling water system for an initial three week period. The concentration of this product can be controned to a discharge concentration acceptable to the Department. After the initial g period, a concentration up to 5 ppn active TIL win be maintained in the j cooling water systam. i. The NAIID 1370 (polyacrylate) will be used and tested as a means to control scale in the cooling water system. We intend to maintain a concentration up to 3 ppm active polyacylate in the cooling water system. The NAICO 1339 (zinc based) will be used and. tested as a means to control steel corrosion in the service water system. We inteM to use a l concentration up to 1 ppm zinc in the cooling water system. l The concentration of these chemical products in the cooling tower blowdown discharge is expected to be the same as stated above. As t t submitted in our NPDES permit application, the Unit #1 cooling tower ? l blowdown rate is expected to be 7.02 million gallons per day. Attached is nore information on the three NAILD products. he f methodology used to obtain the aquatic toxicity of the NAILD 1336 and 1370 was based on the procedures for static bioassay, as described in Methods of Acute Toxicity Tests with Fish, Macroinvertibrates and Amchibious, aM i Standard Methods Ebr Examination of Water and Waste Water. Confidential information, such as the chemical fornula for these chemical products will be or has been sent to you directly from the NAICO Chemical Cmpany.
