Dear Mr. Colvin:
By letter to Chairman ' Jackson dated April'll, 1997, you informed NRC that the industry has decided to extend the completion date for its initiative related to assessing and maintaining ths licensing bases for nuclear power plants from April 1997 to June 14, 1997.
Because it is important for licensees to operate in conformance.with their licensing basis and to have the updated final safety analysis report accurately reflect their design bases and regulatory requirements, we are disappointed with the extended implementation date.
As discussed in a letter to you from Chairman Jackson dated August 14, 1996, the NRC will continue inspection and oversight activities related to design bases to ensure compliance with existing regulations.
