l NARRATIVE

SUMMARY

OF o

MONTHLY OPERATING EXPERIENCE UNIT 1 MAY 1997

{

May 1 The Unit operated at a nominal value of 100% output for the entire report period.

through May 31 In addition to the above, the following events which also occurred during the report period are being reponed as required by Technical Specifications.

May 1 The Automatic Rod Position Deviation Monitor, although still functional, was not through considered operable per Technical Specifications. The limiting condition for May 31 operation as specified in the Technical Specifications was met because the deviations between the indicated rod positions were verified to be within their 12 step limits by obtaining analog / digital rod positions at least once every 4 hours4.62963e-5 days
0.00111 hours
6.613757e-6 weeks
1.522e-6 months
.

l May 15 At 1205 hours0.0139 days
0.335 hours
0.00199 weeks
4.585025e-4 months
, the Analog Rod Position Indication (ARPI) versus the group demand counters for control rods H-2 and P-8 were determined to be reading greater than the Technical Specification limit of 12 steps. In addition, the primary detector voltage readings also showed both control rods to be high outside of their 12 step limit.' The limiting condition for operation as specified in the Technical Specifications was met because incore data was used to verify actual rod position in the core which showed that control rods H-2 and P-8 were within 12 steps of the group demand counters. At 1330 hours0.0154 days
0.369 hours
0.0022 weeks
5.06065e-4 months
, the ARPI for control rod P-8 was returned to within 12 steps. A reactivity manipulation was commenced at 1420 hours0.0164 days
0.394 hours
0.00235 weeks
5.4031e-4 months
to restore all rods to the fully withdrawn position. At 1435 hours0.0166 days
0.399 hours
0.00237 weeks
5.460175e-4 months
, all rod ARPIs were shown to be within 12 steps of the group demand counters.

May 16 At 1025 hours0.0119 days
0.285 hours
0.00169 weeks
3.900125e-4 months
, control rod H-2 was removed from service to perform a calibration 1 of its Analog Rod Position Indication (ARPI). Following completion of the !

calibration, it was determined that the ARPI for control rod H-2 would remam out-of-service, and that rod position would be determined by reading the primary l detector voltage every four hours per Technical Specifications. Control rod H-2 j remained inoperable for the remainder of the repon period.
