SUBJECT:

Beaver Valley Power Station - Unit No. 2 Docket No. 50-412 Use of Multiflex 3.0 on Beaver Valley Power Station Unit 2 Gentlemen:

As part of the structural analyses for Beaver Valley Power Station Unit 2 (BVPS-2), Westinghouse has performed structural analyses using a revised version of the Multiflex computer code (i.e., Multiflex 3.0). The previous version of Multiflex has been approved by the NRC (see the June 17, 1977, acceptance letter for WCAP-8708[P] and WCPA-8709(NP] entitled "Multiflex - A Fortran-IV Computer Program for Analyzing Thermal-Hydtmilics-Structure System Dynamics," acceptance letter from J. F. Stolz, NRC, to C.

Eicheldinger, Westinghouse).

The application of Multiflex 3.0 on BVPS-2 includes:

1. Reactor vessel internals / fuel analysis
2. Blowdown analysis for postulated pipe breaks in the 8" RCS hot / cold leg cross connect piping The modifications to the topical report are primarily in the struc-tural areas and it appears that review of the Multiflex 3.0 topical (WCAP-9735[P], Rev. 1, and WCAP-9736[NP]) by the Mechanical Engineering Branch is indicated.

Please note that WCAP-9735, Rev. 1, contains proprietary information of Westinghouse Electric Corporation. In conformance with the requirements of 10CFR Section 2.790, as amended, of the Commission's regulations, we are enclos ing with this submittal an application for withholding from public disclosure by the Commission.

Correspondence with respect to the af fidavit or application for withholding should reference CAW-84-98 and should be addressed to R. A.

Wiesemann, Manager, Regulatory and Legislative Affairs, Westinghouse Electric Corporation, P .O. Box 355, Pittsburgh, PA 15230.

'Uaitcd Stctea Nucleer Rsgulctory Commiccion Mr. Ge:rga W. Knighton, Chief Page_2 In accordance with procedures regarding the handling of proprietary info rmat ion, the following are enclosed:

1. WCAP-9735, Rev.1, entitled "Multiflex 3.0 - A Fortran-IV Computer Program for Analyzing Thermal-Hydraulic-Structural System Dynamics (III) Advanced Beam Model" (Proprietary.)
2. WCAP-9736 entitled "Multiflex 3.0 - A Fortran-IV Computer Program for Analyzing Thermal-Hydraulic-Structural System Dynamics (III)

Advanced Beam Model" (Non-Proprietary).

3. Application for Withholding, CAW-84-98 (Non-Proprietary).
4. Affidavit (Non-Proprietary).

Three additional copies of WCAP-9735 and WCAP-9736 will be transmit-ted separately to the NRC Project Manager.

It should be noted that Westinghouse used Multiflex 3.0 in several structural evaluations for the Westinghouse A-2 Owners Group. These analyses were submitted to the staf f and a preliminary review was performed. However, the A-2 Owners Group resolved Generic Issue A-2 based on elimination of RCS primary loop pipe breaks (NRC Generic Letter 84-04) and no additional review of the structural analyses mentioned above was performed including review of the Multiflex 3.0 material.

. Should you have questions regarding any of the items related to this submittal, please contact us.
