SUSQUEHANNA STEAM ELECTRIC STATION DRINKING WATER CHLORINE PUMP FAILURE PWS ID 2400998 CCN 741326 FILE 012-3 PLE- 7967

Dear Mr. Gilbert:

On Friday, January 10, 1986, at approximately 0830, there was a failure of the chlorine pump used to treat drinking water at the Susquehanna SES. The source of this water supply is the Susquehanna River. Drinking fountains were posted as follows:

l l

i Do not use water until further notice. ,

A replacement chlorine pump began operating sometime during the early evening on the same date. Once this chlorine pump became operational the system was tested for free available chlorine (FAC) and fecal coliforms. Over the weekend of January 11 and 12, 1986, the average FAC level was between 0.1 and 0.2 mg/l with a 0.42 mg/l high level at certain system end points. In l

addition, samples were collected for fecal coliforms on Monday, January 13, 1986, indicating an MPN of less than 2.2.

The results of FAC and fecal coliform analyses indicated that the water was safe to drink. Therefore, on Thursday, January 16, 1986, in accordance with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources Safe Drinking Water Regulations, Section 109.402, December 8, 1984, the posting was removed from the drinking fountains.

If you have any questions, please call me at (215) 770-7889.
