Schedule for Completion of Containment Reanalysis Calculations Gentlemeni We submitted a summary of the methodology we plan to use to reanalyze the containment pressure response following a LOCA in Reference (b). Your staffissued a request for additional information (RAI) on our proposed methodology in Reference (c). We completed our responses to your RAI and submitted a revised methodology report to you in Reference (d). I We indicated in Reference (d) that the calculations supporting the methodology report would be completed by March 30,1997 and that we expected to submit the analysis results and associated proposed technical .

specification changes by June 16,1997. Although we have made considerable progress in completing the calculations, emerging work has reduced the resources available to complete the independent review of these ,

calculations and perform the reanalysis. We expect this to be a continuing problem for the remainder of the j year.  !

We expect to complete the calculations supporting the methodology report, Reference (d), by at least two l

- weeks prior to startup. Furthermore, we expect to submit the analysis results and associated proposed l technical specification changes by December 31,1997. In the interim, we plan to use the Reference (d)  !

methodology to reanalyze the containment pressure respoose following a LOCA at reduced power, initial containment pressure and cold leg tem.perature. The goal of the analysis is to demonstrate that the peak containment pressure is less than approximately 50 psig when operating under the Confirmatory Order, Reference (e), with additional restrictions on cold leg temperature. We plan to impose additional administrative limits on cold leg tempe ature to stay within the upper bound value assumed in the analysis. 4 OI AWl 9706100061 970604 m a. s, s, !amtMI PDR ADOCK 05000309 P PDR i

Attention: Document Control Desk Page Two The power level (2440 MWth) and mitial containment pressure (2 psig) for the interim analysis will correspond to the Confirmatory Order, Reference (e). Parameters which we have identified to be treated  !

statistica!!y in Rea:rence (d) will be treated at their upper bound (conservative) values to reduce the number of cases while assuring conservative results. We plan to complete the interim analysis by at least two weeks  ;

prior to startup. The analysis and results will be available in our offices for your resiew.

We trust that the information in this letter is satisfactory. Please contact me if you have any questions.
