The percent of the required volume (s) it' ntified are based on information taken from previous examination data. Big Rock Point and ransumers Energy Company ultrasonic level III, believe that  !
the documented percent of volume (s) f the 45 degree scans that are performed from the shell/ head ,
side towards the flange or nozzles for nese requests for relief are conservative, and in most cases i

, actual examination coverage would probably be higher. l i j Big Rock Point also believes that it is not necessary to reedculate the percent of required volume t l coverage from the shell/ head side, even though the 45 degree scans may increase by several l percentage points. This is based on the personnel labor and radiation exposure required for i scaffolding installation / removal, insulation removal / replacement and retaking actual measurements on ' the component (s), when the percentage of the required volume examined would not substantially , increase and relief from code requirements would still be necessary. l la V r s

Request For Relief: RR-16 Comoonent Identification Code Class 1 Code Reference IWB-2500 Table IWB-2500-1 Examination Category B-A Item Number Bl.40 Component Description Reactor Pressure Vessel - Closure Head - Head to Flange Weld Weld Number: 806 2 Code ReauiremeD1 Table IWB-2500-1, Category B-A, Item Bl.40 requires a volumetric and surface examination of 100% of the weld length. Basis For Relief Due to component design configuration (reference previously supplied Drawing E-201-806-4) relating to the weld and flange proximity, the ultrasonic examination which is performed is limited in that the l code required volume cannot be achieved in all scanning paths. The percent of required volume l identified are based off of examination data. The axial angle beam scan from the head side with the beam direction towards the flange will allow examination of approximately 45% of the required volume for both the 45 and 60 degree search units. The head flange is in close proximity to the weld (806-2), so the scan lengths are limited in the axial angle beam scan from the flange towards the head. The required volumetric examination is limited to approximately 15% for the 45 degree search unit and 5% for the 60 degree search unit. , The total examination volume for the axial angle beam scans with two direction coverage will be 5%. l This is based on the use of a 60 degree search unit which is the most limiting angle. [ The 0 degree ultrasonic examination of the weld required volume is limited to approximately 45% l coverage. The limitation for this scan is a result of the design configuration where there is not a i constant parallel back surface (loss of backwall signal). The transverse scans (clockwise and counterclockwise) are not limited based on using Code Case N-460. These scans are performed by oscillating the search unit approximately i20 degrees.
