Dear Mr. Thompson:
I am responding to your May 5, 1997, letter to the Chairman in which you request a meeting with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on behalf of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma to discuss the proposed development of a spent nuclear fuel and/or radioactive waste storage facility. As my staff has discussed with you, the purpose of the meeting is to exchange information regarding the regulatory requirements and licensing process for an independent spent fuel storage installation (ISFSI). The ISFSI would be located in the State of Kansas or the Tribe's Native American trust lands.
We are willing to meet at your earliest convenience to discuss the Tribe's plans and related topics. As it will be a meeting between the NRC staff a potential applicant and licensee, the meeting will be open to the public, and all non-proprietary material associated with this meeting and future interactions will be available in our Public Document Room.
The meeting will be announced in NRC's Public Meeting Notice System.
