INTRODUCTION The objective of this monthly report is to document compliance with the nonradiolcgical (aquatic) environmental monitoring programs specified in Sections 3.1.1.a(4) , 3.1.2.a. , and 4.6.1 of the Environmental Technical Specifications (ETS) . These programs have been carried out as directed in the Environmental Controls Aquatic Sampling Manual. Program elements being conducted under contract to GPU Nuclear Corporation include benthic macroinvertebrates, ichthyoplankton, fish population dynamics (seine and electrofishing) creel surveys , and water quality. The ultimate purpose of these studies is to obtain a database sufficient to establish the natural fluctuations within the ecosystem and identify any significant biological alterations resulting from the TMINS.

Compliance with all programs specified in the ETS and detailed in the Aquatic Sampling Manual was achieved in December. Field work require-ments described in the ETS and associated with the 1985 sampling season were completed as of 26 November. No collections were made during December.

Data presented in this report are considered provisional, pending subse-quent proofing, analysis, and presentation in the annual report.

Water Ouality Analysis Ob iec t ive : To measure select physical and chemical parameters of the Susquehanna River in the vicinity of Three Mile Island Nuclear Station (TMINS) concurrent with General Ecological

( Survey samples.

Progress: Water quality data collected during 1985 were organized and prepared for computer entry.

Benthic Mac ro inve r t eb r a t e s Objective: To as sess the abundance . dis tribution, and diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates at three stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

4 Progress: Laboratory sorting, identification and biomass determination was completed for all benthos collected on 16 July and 13 August. Benthos samples collected on 10 September were processed, however, biomass determina tions of the Chironomids was not completed. Sorting of October and November benthos samples was also completed. Key punching of April, May, June, and July data was initiated.

Ob iec t ive : To determine species composition, relative abundance. density, seasonal and spatial distribution of ichthyoplankton at eight stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

Progresa: Ichthyoplankton field sampling for the 1985 season was completed with the 28 August collection. Laboratory iden-tification/ tabulation of all ichthyoplankton collected on 13, 20, and 29 May, and larvae collected from four stations on 5 June were comple ted .

Seine Dhjecliyr: To assess species composition, relative abundance, seasonal and spatial distribution, condition f actor, occur-rence of parasites, anomalies and fish kills, and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to seine capture at six stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

  • 6 Erogress-Electrofishing Objective: To assess species composition, relative abundance.

I occurrence of parasites, anomalies and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to electrofisher capture at six stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

Progress: All 1985 electrofishing data were coded and prepared for computer entry.

Creel Survev Ob iec t ive : To investigate the extent of success of sport-fishing, and determine angler residence and use of catch, '

in the Susquehanna River near TMINS.

Ersgress: Creel survey tabulations of species caught /

harvested during 1985 and angler residence were initiated.
