Sub ject : Auxiliary Feedwater Flow Indication (NUREG-0737, Iten II.E.1.2, part 2)

Dear Sir:

Maine Yankee has cotopleted the installation of the snbject system as requit ed in Reference (b).

As discussed in our letter, Reference (c), Maine Yankee is providing a description of the subject design and how this design has met the requirements of your letter, Reference (b).

We trus t that you will find this information satisfactory; however, should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Very truly yourr, MAINE YANKEE ATCMIC POWER COMPANY s

- Page 1 of 2 Attachment A Auxiliary Feedwater Flow . Indication II .E.1. 2 Pa r t 2 This system provides an indication of auxiliary feedwater flow to each steam i gene rato r. An ultrasonic flow sensor is mounted on each auxiliary feedwater line, upstream of the auxiliary feedwater ( AFW) valve and bypass line. This sensor provides input to a flow computer mounted to the east wall of the AFWS pump room. The flow computer provides a signal to an indicator (FIT-1201, A, B, C) mounted on Section B of the main control board.

The following specific items have been considered in the design:

1) Environmental Qualification i The presently installed ultrasonic sensors and electronics have been qualified to the expected environment including the effects of high.

energy line breaks in that area. Long-term radiation due to recirculating fluids may cause damage to the electronic portions of the system but adequate spare parts and portable units for replacement or temporary use are available for long-term operation under accident conditions. Further discussion of this item can be found in our response to Bulletin 79-01B.

ii) Power Supply L The entire system is powered from a battery backed IE power source.

iii) Testability Testability of each indication channe: has been provided by the purchase

. of a portable ultrasonic flow tester which can be used to measure flow and input test parameters into the Unit.

j iv) Quality Assurance The system has -been purchased and installed under our Quality Assurance Program. Spare parts are maintained-in our warehouse under strict Q.A.

F standards for storage and handling. The test unit is maintained and calibrated periodically with known calibration standards.

v) Display Capability The continuous display unit is located adjacent to each flow control valve station in the main control room. This provides the operator with i

direct feedback -upon operation of the auxiliary- feedwater system, whether automatic or manual during both normal and abnormal conditions.

Supporting design information including electrical schematics, piping and instrument d iag rams , and test procedures are available for your review at the plant.
