Dear Mr. Standerfer:
Subject:
Seismic Design Criteria am i
References:
(1) GPUN letter, F. R. Standerfer to B. J. Snyder, 4410-85-L-0077, dated April 16, 1985 (2) NRC letter, W. D. Travers to F. R. Standerfer, NRC/TMI-85-052, dated July 29, 1985 (3) GPUH letter, F. R. St>nderfer to W. D. Travers, 4410-85-t-0188, dated September 27, 1985 We have reviewed the additional information in your letter (reference 3) which was submitted in response to the staff'r, questions (reference 2). We agree with your general findings that T111-2 systems installed since the 1979 accident or likely to be installed for future TMI-2 cleanup activities should not be required to meet seismic design criteria referenced in Appendix A to 10 L
CFR Part 100. However, as pointed out in discussions between our staffs, the
'1 applicability of flRC design requirements must be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Individual detenninations of the need for seismic design have, in fact, been mde for cleanup systems currently installed and operational. Any g
future systems will necessarily require this same individual assessment.
The infonnation you have presented demonstrates that in general the offsite dose consequences of potential worst-case accidents at TMI-2 is and should remain relatively small. This information is likely to be relevant to any future cleanup system evaluations and should be referenced in any future submittal requesting NRC approval.
Va.'y truly yours,
