Dear Sir:
Revised Response to 10 CFR 50.62(d)
In a letter dated October 11, 1985, Portland General Electric Company (PGE) submitted an AMSAC implementation schedule to the NRC in response to Sec-tion 50.62(d) of the ATWS rule. The purpose of this letter is to advise the NRC that PGE is proceeding with a revised implementation schedule, as described and justified below.
In the subject letter referenced above PGE proposed to implement AMSAC by December 31, 1987. This schedule was based on receiving an BRC Safety Evaluation Report (SER) on the AMSAC Ceneric Design Package (WCAP-10858) in November 1985, followed by an estimated 18 and 24 months lead time necessary to complete implementation. The subject letter predicated the schedule on receiving an NRC approval of WCAP-10858 by the end of 1985, an:* noted that any significant delay of NRC approval beyond that time would impact the schedule. This is because, as explained in the letter, PGE needs to evalu-ate the impact of the SER on each of the designs described in WCAP-10858 in order to determine which logic is best suited for Trojan. Detailed design cannot commence at least until after the SER impact has been evaluated and a final design logic selected.
As of the date of this letter, approval of WCAP-10858 is yet to be received from the NRC.
This represents at least a 5-month delay in the AMSAC schedule, and therefore, pushes implementation into mid-1988. Therefore, PGE is revising its AMSAC schedule such that final implementation will be 8603210056 060317 PDR ADOCK 05000344
