Letter, Curtis A. Shook to Robert J. Gregg dated October 18, 1985

Dear Mr. Shook:

I am pleased to have been able to provide the Town Council an update on the status of our decommissioning efforts on October 15th, and would be willing to do so periodically in the future, at the Council's request.

Also, I would like to restate my invitation to the Council to visit the UNC site at a mutually convenient time in the future.

With regard to your request that the Council be placed on the copy list of relevant correspondence with the regulatory agencies concerning the decommissioning process, it has been our position in the past and continues to be, that the Regulatory Agencies are the parties that should make the judgment as to what information should be made available.

I have discussed this with W. T. Crow of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and he has indicated that (1) the NRC continues to maintain Public Document Rooms at URI and at the Cross Mill Public Library in Charlestown, which contain copies of all such information, and (2) that he intends to respond to the copy of your referenced letter which was sent to him.

Also, I would like to reiterate what I said during the meeting on the 15th, i.e.,

that in actuality, there has been very little formal correspondence between ourselves and the NRC during the past couple of years, and to a large extent, activities have been in a holding pattern while we were awaiting the results of the NRC contractor's confirmatory surveys, 5

Irrespective of the above, we will attempt to keep the Council informed of any significant developments regarding the 4

decommissioning effort in the future, by direct contact with your office, and should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time.

Very truly yours,
