Dear Mr. Hillman:
McMaster University would like-to apply for approval of our proposed route (copy attached) for a spent fuel shipment from.the Canadian border to Savannah River. The shipment is currently scheduled for early January,1986.
I have attached copies of both our proposed route (996 miles) and the suggested route supplied by you (1165 miles).
Both routes. have been discussed with Earl Routenkruger of Tri State Transit, who will be the carrier, and he has no objection to either route. The cask.to be-used is.the Battelle BMI-1.
We have proposed the shorter route for two reasons; a) distance, and b) the possibility of weather problems in. upper NY state.
We realize that both routes have some areas to be surveyed.
Our proposed route needs a survey of about 8 miles of I-190 from the border to I-90 (NY),.and of about 77 miles of I-79 from I-80 to I-70 (PA) while your sugges, ted route only needs the former.
We trust, however, that there is sufficient time to approve ou: proposal, if not, we request the suggested route.
Either route involves seven statei, and both require appropriate co-ordination with New York and Pennsylvania ' state authorities. Our proposal also requires an escort through Charleston, West Virginia..The suggested route requires an escort through' Roanoke, Virginia.
The details of our proposed route in southeastern West Virginia and Virginia are intended to follow previously approved routes. Thus, if my summary description of the route from I-77 in West Virgin _ia to I-81 in Virginia is in error, please correct it.
I trust that the above is in order.
If further information is required please contact me.
Since we propose to ship soon after Christmas, I would g1140069851015 C
