J, DESCRIPTION:

j t.

s

~

The devicefconsibts.ofitwo parts: thel transmitter, and the

^

receiver.

4 The transmitter consists of.aescre$ned source holder enclosed.in a aluminum box having dimensions of 8.66 X 4.33 X 3.15 inches (220 X 110 X 80 millimeters)., The source holder consists of an l

Amersham source capsule and collimator 1.57" (40 mm) in diameter enclosed in an aluminum tube.

This source model is smaller than

{

the original source model the device was designed for, therefore, a teflon' sleeve was inserted over the new source so that it was the same size as the original source model.

The source is held in place by a lock ring. The aluminum tube is attached to a sliding plate with screws.

The other end of the sliding plate is attached to a pneumatic cylinder that allows the source assembly to move by the use of guide rails and ball bearings in contact with the sliding plate.

The end plates of the device are sealed with gaskets to reduce intrusion of moisture and dust within the device.

As the cylinder engages the source is moved to the center of the holder body where the radiation can pass through a thin teflon diaphragm.

When the source capsule is in this center position a red plastic pin extrudes through a side cover plate giving a visible warning that the source is in the "open" position.

An inductive transducer is also installed which sends an electric signal to indicate the position of the source capsule.

Also, two safety lights one at each end are fitted to indicate the position of the source.

If the source is in the open position a red light with the radioactive symbol lights, if the source is in the closed position then the green light with the radioactive symbol crossed out lights.

Emergency stops are. installed at'.,each end to shut the source and l

to stop the scanner.

If for some reason the air supply to the pneumatic cylinde'r failed,' a spring would automatically cause the source to return to the*sa'fe. position.

l The calibration period for this device is every 6 months and maintenance on the device may occur daily.

The source is loaded into the source holder by removing a plate located on the top of the device.

Once the source is loaded by authorized personnel it is sealed with bolts and lock washers and then covered with a sticker.

l The receiver is a special alloy Ion Chamber.

l A 1.97" x 1.97" x 0.197" (500 mm x 500 mm x 5 mm) aluminum screen i

plate is attached to each the receiver and to the transmitter.

The transmitter and receiver are fitted to a 0-Frame Scanner with a maximum distance between the screening plates.

l During tran' sport of the device a transport lock is installed on the side of the transmitter with screws to lock the sources in a safe position, l

LABELING:

A 3.94" x 1.97" (100 mm x 50 mm) label containing the radiation symbol, date, isotiope, and. activity is screwed into the side of the-transmitter.

The O-Frame Scanner contains a large label with a radiation symbol and text stating " CAUTION - RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL".[The device"also hasfa label showing the manufacturer, and model numbsr.

SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

Based on our review of the information cited below, we continue to. conclude that the model Nsh-1 gauging device design is

]

acceptable for custom licensing purposes.

Furthermore, we

]

conclude that the device as designed would be expected to maintain its integrity for normal conditions of use with might occur during uses specified in this certification.

Not enough data was available to determine the ability of the device to withstand accidental conditions of use.

However, if the device was involved in an incident it is highly likely that the source would also be damaged the Krypton gas would disperse very rapidly in the environment causing minimal exposure the the

. workers.

SAFETY ItiSTRUCTIO!1S FOR RADIOACTIVE SOURCES i

Radioactive sources may only be handled by personnel 1.

having official authorizations.

1 For a person working in a radioactive hazardous area, the

{

maximum annual dose is 50 mSv (= 5 rem).

Thus, the 2.

average dose rate has to be less than 25 uSv/h in those (25 usv/h x 40 h x 50 weeks = 50.000 uSv/a = 50 f

areas mSv/a).

The nominal values for safely screened beta source used

)

3.

in basis weight meters are:

a) with open shutter at the edges of the safety i

plates:

less than 25 uSv/h (2,5 mrem /h) on a distance of 1 meter f rom the source with open b) or closed shutter:

less than 7,5 usv/h (0, 75 i

4 mrom/h) at the surface of the source holder with closed c) shutter in all directions:

less than 2 mSv/h (200 mrem /h).

Continuous exposure of human tissue is forbidden here.

At radiation hazard measurement the dose equivalent man 4.

unit Sievert (SV)

(- 100 rem) and the absorbed dose unit Older

( = 100 rad) can be kept as equivalents.

Gray (Gy) instruments may also be calibrated using Roentgen (R) units, which is defined as the expos'tred doue unit.

For radiation hazard purposes 1 rem = 1 rad = 1 R = 10 mSv, where rem rad and R are (not SI-normed) obsolete units.

1 GENERAL SAFETY PROCEDURES FOR SCIENTA DEVISE

^

4 1.

Operators should stay six feet away from the scanner head.

'.f needed, when running controls on panel or

)

working around scanner head, the shutters can be closed.

Releasing the red button light will indicate the shutter is open.

When the shutter is open there is also a red rod on the scanner head that should be out.

When the j

shutter is closed the rod will not be visible and the i

green light will be on.

2.

Use safety glasses when cleaning or working around head and have the shutter closed.

3.

Talk to your supervisor if any problems occur or if you l

are unsure of the Scienta operations.

l SCIENTA QUALITY CONTROL SYSTEMS i

l

1. The source capoule (7) is fitted in a piece of tube (4), which is mounted to a slide plate (3) moving along l

j rails (2) using standard steel balls as bearings.

l springloaded pneumatic cylinder (13) has its piston

2. A connected to the slide.

When pressurized the source l

assembly will move to a point in the center of the holder body where a hole with a thin teflon diaphragm admits the radiation to paso down to the receiver, the ion chamber.

i When the source capsule is in this working position a red l

plastic pin (15) is exposed through one of the side cover l

plates (16).

3. There is also an electric signal from an internal Inductive Transducer (25) which is available when the safety shutter is moving (even only slightly) from its standby (cafe) position. The signal indicates that the

)

i source is not completely safe and is used to illuminate remote set 9ty indicator lamps and gives alarm signal to i

the computer.

4.

The loadLng of the nourco holder is carried out through a lid (29) on the top of the main body, without of the holder. This work is dismantilng any other part allowed onoy by qualified poinnnnol. When loaded, one of the ucrown of the lid is sealed officially.

5. When the courco holder in transported, a small locking piece (36) is fitted over the red pin indicator hole on the cover plate (16). The piece keeps mechanically the safety shutter in its safe position. The locking lid has to be removed before use.
6. Two infrared position indicatore (24) are connected mechanically to the source holder. They have no influence on the oefety arrangement.

To the cource holder and to the receiver is normally 7.fitted two 500x500 mm screen plates made from 5 mm thick aluminum.

The distance between the opposite plates is normally less than 16 mm

(=

0,63 in) which makes it impossible to put human fingers in the primary radiation beam.
