December 16, 1985 Docket No. 50-277 Mr. Daniel R. Muller, Director BWR Project Directorate #2 Division of Boiling Water Reactor Licensing U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

20555

SUBJECT:

Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station, Unit No. 3 Containment Purge and Vent Valve Modifications

REFERENCE:

Letter dated February 20, 1985, J.

F. Stolz, NRC, to E. G.

Bauer, Jr., PECo

Dear Mr. Muller:

The referenced letter approved operation with greater opening positions for nine containment purge and vent valves on Peach Bottom Unit 3 contingent upon providing written confirmation to the NRC af ter completion of modifications that (1) the present material for the valve shaf ts and pins have been replaced with a high strength steel and (2) the orientation of the valve disc with respect to the flow corresponds with the opening positions and valve sizes as described in the referenced letter.

The following table identifies the nine valves on Peach Bottom Unit No. 3 for which all the modifications described above have been confirmed as being completed.

The table also identifies the as-lef t valve orientation and the new maximum open position.

%3 Mr. Daniel R. Muller December 16, 1985 Page 2 These valves will be operated in accordance with the new opening limitations as authorized in the NRC's February 20, 1985 letter.

As described in an April 24, 1984 letter (S. L.

Daltroff, PECo, to J.

F. Stolz, NRC), the valve disc orientation planned for valves AO-3511 and AO-3520 was " flow into hubside",

permitting a maximum opening angle of 55 degrees.

Subsequently, the design 'of the modification for these valves was changed to orient the valve disc with the " flow into flatside".

This permits a maximum opening angle of 65 degrees.

The design change conforms to the criteria approved by the NRC in the referenced February 20, 1985 letter and is stated here for your information.

Should you have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Very truly yours s.//
