OFFICE MEMORANDUM To L. R. Jacobi ST-HL-19080 from M. E. Powel
.subint Incident Review Comittee (IRC) Meeting Minutes Conc nik M AIO:56 Gpmputer Program Verification (Item #96); May 11, 1981 SOUTH TEXAS PROJECT ELECTRIC GENE, RATING STATION GF gry *a.
03 XETmc h h The IR'C was convened to evaluate an item concerning the use of computer programs (codes) on the South Texas Project (STP).
During a recent technical assessment of B&R, several concerns were identified regarding B&R's approach to computer program (code) verifica-tion. These concerns are that many of the B&R computer codes (that are presently used) are unverified at the present time and the possibility exists that their use on STP might result in an inadequate design.
In addition, the verification program for a particular code lacks visibility to the user as to whether or not the program versions of the code in use have been verified.
Lastly, there are some contems as to how computer codes are controlled by B&R procedures with regard to safety related applications.
On the evening of May 8,1981, the HL&P IRC Chairman notified the NRC-Region IV, that the 8&R verification program lacks visibility to the user as to whether or not the program versions in use have been verified. This concern is potentially reportable pursuant to 10CFR50.55(e).
O Information supplied by B&R indicates that B&R has completed the verifica-tion of 13 of 23 codes and they appear to be satisfactory.
1.
As a result of the May ll,1981 IRC meeting, the following action items have been assigned:
I
(1) B&R is to provide a description of their computer code verifica-tion process and identify any procedures that control this pro-Cess.
s(2). B&R to provide a listing which identifies all the codes used
.on STP, the status of the review for each (if they intend to verify them and why) and whether or not the codes relate to safety related applications.
~(3) B&R to address the procedural (control) concerns of the technical assessment which would allow calculations to be performed with unverified computer codes.
(4) B&R is to define what actions are being taken (internally to t
B&R), and why, relative to the findings of the technical assessment recently per.fomed.
e (5) B&R is to identify how' codes are controlled,_with regardjo-
', safety related applications.
