NRC STAFF RESPONSE TO PRESIDING OFFICER'S ORDER DATFD APRTT. R 1097 On April 8,1997, the Presiding Officer issued an Order directing the Staff to provide the Hearing File required in this proceeding, by May 8,1997. That Order also required the Staff to provide by April 18, 1997, an estimate of the number of pages that the Hearing File would I

contain. The Staff's best estimate, based upon papers cunently available to it, is that the prospective Hearing File will number more than 180 pages.

The issues before the Presiding Officer concem the simulator portion of the Senior Reactor Operator examination administered to Mr. Calabrese. The examination was prepared by the '

utility. Upon receiving the April 8,1997 Order, the Staff requested that the utility, by expedited delivery, send to the Staff, certain identified documents that provide the bases for the simulator 9705080123 970423 PDR MISC 9705000114 PDR _
