NRC Generic Letter 97-01 from Mr. T. T. Martin (NRC) to All Holders of Operating License for Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs), dated April 1,1997, Degradation of Control Rod Drive Mechanism Nozzle and Other Vessel Closure Head Penetrations The purpose of this letter is to forward Baltimore Gas and Electric Company's (BGE's) 30-day response to NRC Generic Letter 97-01 (Reference a). The generic letter was issued "to (1) request addressees to describe their program for ensuring the timely inspection of PWR control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) and other vessel closure head penetrations (VHPs) and (2) require that all addressees provide to the NRC a written response to the requested information." In the 30-day response, the NRC requested licensees to indicate whether or not the requested information will be submitted, and whether or not the requested information will be submitted within the requested 120-day time period.
Baltimore Gas and Electric Company is working with industry groups and the Combustion Engineering Owners Group in addressing reactor vessel head nozzle cracking issues. We are continuing this participation in order to assemble and analyze the relevant information in formulating the report requested by Generic Letter 97-01. Baltimore Gas and Electric Company intends to submit a written report providing the information requested by the generic letter within the requested 120-day period if the schedule or the content of the report needs to be revised from that requested in Generic Letter 97-01, based upon information from the industry groups or for other reasons, we will provide appropriate notification to the NRC.
