b April 30, 1997 Mr. Jon W. Christopherson 358 S. College Valparaiso, IN 46383

Dear Mr. Christopherson:

By letter dated April 27,1997, you requested an opportunity to discuss with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission an alternative method of nuclear waste disposal that is quick, clean, efficient, and permanent. NRC, however, does not develop or test such methodology. As a regulatory agency, NRC is only responsible for reviewing the technology proposed by a licensee to assure that the method adequately protects public health and safety. The U.S. Department of Energy is responsible for developing the disposal technology and the disposal site, as well as, research and development projects related to all energy matters.

Sincerely,

/s Michael J. Bell, Acting Chief Performance Assessment and HLW Integration Branch Division of Waste Management Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards i
