CONNECTICUT P O BOX 270 HARTFORD. CONNECTICUT 06141-0270 TELEPHONE 203-ses-som March 7,1986 Docket No. 50-213 A05084 B12016 Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attn:

Mr. Christopher 1. Grimes Integrated Safety Assessment Project Directorate Division of PWR Licensing - B U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555 Gentlemen:

Haddam Neck Plant Masonry Wall Design, IE Bulletin 80-11 Supplemental Information In a December 31,1985(I) letter Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company (CYAPCO) provided responses to Staff requests for information with respect t_q masonry wall design at the Haddam Neck Plant. In a Febnaary 18, 1986 letter,(4 CYAPCO advised the NRC that mortar cracks, identified during an October 29, 1985 site walkdown, did not invalidate previous responses to IE Bulletin 80-11 and that structural integrity of the walls was not impaired.

Additionally, the Staff was advised that CYAPCO would repair and monitor the cracked areas.

Further information regarding the repair and monitoring procedures is provided as follows.

The mortar joint cracks in the subject walls will be chipped out in a progressive manner so as to not weaken the remaining portion of the wall. The joint will then be remortared in the same progressive manner. This repair will be done in a manner to ensure that the repaired joint has the original design strength in both bending and shear.

The repairs will be completed by the end of the next refueling outage (currently r,cheduled for summer 1987).

The walls will be monitored for any indications that the subject cracks are reappearing. If a crack reappears, CYAPCO will reevaluate the cause of the crack and determine the need for corrective action. Any necessary repair will be made during the next operating cycle of the unit.
